Durability and service life
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) puts greater emphasis on reuse, the durability and service life of reusable packaging. A packaging solution designed for repeated use must be able to perform across multiple cycles of filling, transport, handling, cleaning and refilling. For VARIBOX, reuse is built into the design. With a service-life approach focused on long-term use in closed-loop logistics, VARIBOX IBCs combine durability with supporting test, wash-cycle and field-performance evidence.

Durability and service life: designed for repeated use
Reusable packaging needs to be built to last
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is putting reuse higher on the packaging agenda. For industrial packaging, that raises one practical question:
How long can a reusable packaging solution actually remain in service?
Meaningful reuse goes beyond filling a container a second time. Packaging must withstand repeated filling, transport, handling, emptying, cleaning and refilling.
VARIBOX IBCs are engineered for 5+ years of service in closed-loop logistics.
The design is intended for long service cycles and is supported by drop-test reports, vibration tests, wash-cycle data and field-performance experience.
From reusable in theory to reusable in practice
There is an important difference between packaging that can theoretically be reused and packaging designed around a reuse model.
Repeated journeys
A reusable IBC can move through a closed-loop system many times instead of introducing a new packaging unit for every shipment.
Repeated stresses
Transport, mechanical handling and cleaning are not exceptional events. They are part of the container’s normal operating life.
VARIBOX is engineered as a reusable IBC system for industrial, chemical, food-ingredient, pharmaceutical and lubricant supply chains.
One unit. Multiple cycles.
Engineered for 5+ years of service
Service life is a critical part of the reuse equation. VARIBOX IBCs are engineered for 5+ years of service in closed-loop logistics.
Important: 5+ years describes the design basis of the packaging. It is not a guarantee that every VARIBOX will achieve an identical service life in every application.
Actual service life depends on factors including application, handling, cleaning and logistics.
Designed to continue after the first five years
After 5 years of service, when ADR restricts further use of the inner container, VARIBOX is designed for inner-container replacement, allowing another 5 years of use of the same VARIBOX.
Maintenance and repair are also straightforward: the absence of rivets, screws or welds makes replacement of parts possible with basic tools.
Durability backed by evidence
- Drop-test reports
- Vibration tests
- Wash-cycle data
- Field-performance evidence
Under PPWR, substantiating environmental and reuse claims is increasingly important. The stronger approach is to show what the packaging was designed to do and support that position with relevant evidence.
Tested for demanding handling
During its service life, an IBC can encounter impacts and mechanical stresses during transport, loading, unloading and other handling activities.
Drop testing
Provides evidence relating to impact resistance and the physical performance needed across repeated movements through the supply chain.
Vibration testing
Tests based on several modes of transport help simulate the longer-term impact of transport conditions on an IBC.
The objective is not to suggest that an IBC is indestructible. It is to demonstrate that repeated use and handling requirements have been considered as part of the VARIBOX design.
Reuse includes cleaning
A reuse cycle does not end when an IBC has been emptied. In a closed-loop system, it needs to return and be prepared for its next use.
VARIBOX durability is supported by wash-cycle data because repeated cleaning is part of real reusable operation. Mechanical robustness alone is not enough if cleaning compromises the container’s ability to remain in circulation.
Evidence from real-world use
Individual tests matter, but reusable packaging operates as part of a complete logistics system. Field-performance data adds experience from actual repeated-use applications.
Three complementary evidence areas
- Drop testing: impact resistance.
- Wash-cycle data: repeated cleaning.
- Field performance: repeated handling, transport, return logistics and operational conditions in practice.
Together, these support the proposition that VARIBOX has been designed for long service cycles rather than relying on an unsupported durability claim.
Why durability matters under PPWR
PPWR is intended to move packaging towards greater circularity, including increased reuse and reduced packaging waste. Reuse can only deliver that benefit when packaging can complete repeated rotations.
What evidence is there that the packaging can withstand the cycles it is expected to complete?
For VARIBOX, that question can be addressed with evidence relating to impact resistance, repeated washing and field performance.
Less packaging in. Less waste out.
A reusable VARIBOX can replace a stream of single-use packaging units across its service life. The same IBC can return to the supply chain and begin another cycle.
The principle is simple
The longer packaging can remain effectively in circulation, the fewer replacement packaging units are required over those cycles.
Actual rotations and waste reduction vary by application and reuse system. But the relationship is clear: durability enables repeated use, and repeated use creates the opportunity to reduce packaging entering the supply chain and packaging waste leaving it.
Closed-loop logistics make reuse work
Durability alone does not create a reuse system. Packaging also needs a supply chain that enables it to return after use.
- Return the VARIBOX after emptying.
- Clean and inspect it where required.
- Prepare it for the next filling.
- Repeat the cycle between defined locations or supply-chain partners.
Return logistics, cleaning processes and the way reuse cycles are managed all influence how effectively long service life can be used.
Reuse also needs to be documented
As reuse becomes more important under PPWR, demonstrating that packaging is reusable increasingly requires more than a statement on a product page.
Relevant documentation can include
- Return-logistics information
- Cleaning or wash records
- Supplier documentation
- Laboratory test results
Document what you do and substantiate what you claim.
Designed for repeated use. Backed by evidence.
Reusable packaging needs to do more than carry a “reusable” label. It needs to perform.
5+ years

Evidence-led
Supported by drop-test reports, wash-cycle data and field-performance evidence.
The objective is straightforward: keep packaging in circulation for repeated cycles and reduce the need for packaging to become waste after a single journey.

Want to assess reuse in your packaging fleet?
PPWR readiness starts with understanding where single-use packaging can be replaced, how a return loop could work and whether reusable packaging has the durability to support repeated rotations.
VARIBOX can help assess where it could fit into your closed-loop supply chain and what durability and service-life evidence is available.
